Air Conditioning FAQs
In most cases, air conditioning installation is minimally disruptive and completed within one day for a standard single-room system.
Our engineers work cleanly and efficiently, keeping noise, dust, and disruption to a minimum. The indoor unit is wall-mounted, pipework is neatly routed, and any external equipment is installed with care and consideration for your property.
We will:
Protect flooring and furnishings
Keep drilling and noise to essential levels only
Leave your home or premises clean and tidy
Fully demonstrate the system once installed
For larger or multi-room systems, installation may take slightly longer, but this will always be clearly explained in advance so you know exactly what to expect.
Our aim is simple: a smooth, professional installation with minimal disruption to your day.

When running normally, the indoor unit operates at a low noise level—often quieter than normal conversation. Many systems also include a silent or night mode, which reduces noise even further while you sleep.
Key points to note:
Indoor units are engineered for quiet operation
Outdoor units are installed with noise reduction in mind
Night and eco modes keep sound to an absolute minimum
Ideal for bedrooms, living rooms, and home offices
During installation, we carefully position both indoor and outdoor units to minimise any potential noise impact.
In short, home air conditioning should not be disruptive—it should provide comfort you barely notice, except for the improved temperature and air quality.
While it’s true that the UK experiences peak heat for only a few months, modern air conditioning systems provide benefits all year round, not just in summer.
Here’s why many homeowners choose air conditioning:
Cooling in summer – Stay comfortable during heatwaves and hot nights when opening windows simply isn’t enough
Efficient heating in winter – Most systems provide low-cost, energy-efficient heating using heat-pump technology
Better sleep – Stable temperatures improve sleep quality, especially in bedrooms
Improved air quality – Filters remove dust, pollen, and allergens
Home working comfort – Ideal for offices, loft rooms, and south-facing spaces
Modern air conditioning systems are highly energy efficient, often cheaper to run than traditional electric heating, and can be used daily throughout the year — not just during the hottest months.
In short, it’s not about the weather — it’s about consistent comfort, healthier air, and better control of your home environment all year round.
Today’s systems are air-to-air heat pumps, meaning they can be used all year round for multiple functions:
Cooling – Comfortable temperatures during warm weather
Heating – Highly efficient heating in colder months
Dehumidifying – Reduces excess moisture and condensation
Air filtration – Helps remove dust, pollen, and airborne particles
In heating mode, air conditioning can be very energy-efficient, often costing less to run than traditional electric heaters and providing fast, controllable warmth.
This makes home air conditioning a versatile, year-round comfort system, not just a summer luxury.
After installation, we will:
Test and commission the system to ensure it’s running efficiently
Show you how to use the controls and remote, including heating, cooling, timers, and eco modes
Explain running costs and best settings for comfort and efficiency
Clean the work area and remove all waste and packaging
Register warranties where applicable
You’ll also receive clear guidance on ongoing care and servicing, so your system continues to perform at its best year after year.
If you ever need advice, servicing, or support after installation, we’re only a phone call away. Our goal isn’t just to install your system — it’s to look after it long-term and give you complete peace of mind.
As a sensible guide (typical UK home use):
Single room (bedroom / office): often around 10p–30p per hour in cooling mode
Larger rooms (lounge): often around 20p–50p per hour in cooling mode
Heating mode: can be very cost-effective because most systems deliver more heat energy than the electricity they use (heat-pump efficiency)
What keeps costs down:
Maintaining a steady temperature (rather than blasting it on/off)
Using eco / sleep mode
Keeping doors closed and heat sources controlled
Regular filter cleaning and annual servicing
If you tell me:
the room size (or approximate m²),
whether it’s a bedroom, lounge, loft room, etc., and
roughly how many hours per day you’d run it,
Our engineers regularly service systems installed by other contractors, whether for:
Routine annual servicing
Performance or efficiency issues
Fault finding and repairs
Compliance and maintenance records (where required)
Before any work, we’ll carry out basic checks to confirm the system’s condition and suitability for servicing. If parts are required, we’ll always explain this clearly and provide options before proceeding.
If you’re unsure what brand or model you have, that’s not a problem — we can identify it during the visit.
Our focus is simple: keeping your system running efficiently, safely, and reliably, regardless of who installed it.
Even in domestic homes, air conditioning units collect dust, bacteria, and moisture over time. Without servicing, this can affect performance, air quality, and running costs.
Benefits of regular servicing include:
Lower running costs through improved efficiency
Cleaner, healthier air for your home
Reduced risk of breakdowns
Longer system lifespan
Warranty protection (many manufacturers require regular servicing)
As a general guide:
Domestic systems: service once per year
Commercial systems: may require more frequent servicing depending on use and compliance requirements
A professional service includes cleaning filters and coils, checking refrigerant levels, electrical safety checks, and ensuring the system is operating correctly.
In short, servicing isn’t just about preventing faults — it’s about protecting your investment and maintaining comfort all year round.
As a general guide:
Single-room / single-split system: usually 4–8 hours
Multi-room systems: may take 1–2 days, depending on layout and pipe routes
The exact time depends on:
Distance between indoor and outdoor units
Pipework route and access
Number of rooms being served
Any specialist access requirements
Before installation, we’ll always assess the property and explain how long the work will take, where equipment will be located, and what to expect on the day.
Our engineers work efficiently and cleanly, with minimal disruption, so you can enjoy your new system as quickly and smoothly as possible.
To qualify for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, you generally must:
- Own your home (includes second homes and buy-to-lets).
- Replace a fossil fuel system (like a gas, oil, or LPG boiler) or old electric heaters.
- Have a valid EPC (Energy Performance Certificate) with no outstanding recommendations for loft or cavity wall insulation.
- Use the air con to fully heat your home solely
- Air-to-Water Heat Pumps: Yes, we can help! For these full central heating systems, we operate under an MCS Umbrella Scheme. This allows us to manage the technical design and accreditation requirements so you can access the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme
grant.
- Standard Home Air Conditioning (Air-to-Air): Currently, BBI cannot assist with the grant process for small, room-by-room air conditioning units. Because we are not directly MCS accredited for this specific technology, and our umbrella scheme does not extend to these smaller systems, we are unable to process these applications at this time.
